What happens during ski grinding

What happens in ski grinding – and why XCSkiGuru’s grinding is special

At XCSkiGuru we use the latest programmable grinding line from Svecom, which enables extremely precise and repeatable quality for every ski. When this is combined with the grinding master’s decades of experience, you get a combination that tunes skis into their best possible condition.

Ski grinding is much more than just smoothing the surface. It is a process that tunes skis to perform perfectly for the skier and the specific conditions.

This is how the grinding process proceeds at XCSkiGuru

1. Evaluation

We assess the condition of the ski: base scratches, the state of porosity, and usage history.
Usually the same ski can be reground 5–7 times, so a quality pair will last a long service life when properly maintained.

2. Removal of the old surface – “clean slate”

We remove the old grind and the dirt accumulated over the years. This restores the base to a completely clean clean slate on which a new and functional structure can be built.

Once the intended range of conditions is known, we select the grinding machine’s diamond with which we shape a stone suitable for those conditions. The actual pattern is programmed into this stone.

The patterns are the grinding master’s most important expertise: developed and refined over decades, tested repeatedly in trial skiing, and proven effective in practice.

4. Transferring the pattern onto the ski base

When the pattern contained in the stone is ready, it is ground into the ski base under the guidance of the grinding master. The end result is critically affected by alignment: the correct speed, pressure, and force determine how successful the pattern will be. This work combines cutting-edge technology with master craftsmanship.

5. Finishing and waxing

After the pattern, the base is finished with a delicate surface treatment and thorough waxing. This way the skis are ready for the track – with optimal glide from the very first push.

Why is XCSkiGuru’s grinding different?

Cutting-edge technology: we use the newest programmable Svecom grinding line on the market.
Individualization: every pair is ground according to the skier’s weight, level, and intended use.
Experience: over 30 years of expertise, including World Cup–level skis.
Result: glide that makes the ski truly your tool – not a compromise, but the best possible solution for your exact conditions.
